College Education in the 21st Century – The Future and Technology

SUCCESS AND EDUCATION OF OUR YOUTH

George Mentz is now a Commissioner for the US Presidential Scholars Program. He is also a prolific educator, futurist and historian on education, human performance and business success strategy.

Success scholar George Mentz’s has authored over 40 books and audiobooks including, The Wealth Management Handbook &  “The Secret Laws of Money,” discusses innovative ways to practically apply:  wealth management, financial planning, project management,  and prosperity strategies in daily life. Inspired by Ben Franklin, Sun Tzu, and Marcus Aurelius among others, Mentz says that, “Achievement can be greatly enhanced with just a 1-3% increase in daily performance.” “Fundamentally, education, skills and credentials are keys to success.”

George Mentz is also an award winning author, scholar of success books and law professor. Mentz says that the research of proven success strategies has paid off for countless people.  One of his mottos is “The wings of achievement are based on proven successful models”.

Mentz says, a desire for success, unifies the major business and human performance traditions. People take for granted the principles of success.  Success books are something original to America as the USA was one of the first nations to allow a free press where individuals could write and speak about individualism, entrepreneurship, seeking careers, and creating prosperity.  If you look at the writings of Benjamin Franklin or Emerson, you can see the basic principles of individual success. It was a relatively new idea in early America that you could be, do and have what you legally wanted if you were willing to work for it.

What inspired your research and books?

I was initially intrigued by the idea that if you can model yourself after the mindset of great people, you can achieve success.  Later I found that even the most successful people usually were inspired by a book or a person.  Finding out what smart or happy people do and think to achieve results began to be one of my lifetime goals. It became a study of the consciousness of success.

In reading self help books, what do you seek to learn?

You can read a whole book on success and maybe get just one or two key nuggets of success from the book.  However, that one little nugget can be a life saver or the real secret to achieving success in a particular area such as: Sports, Business, Survival, Health, Relationships,  Investing or even Taxation.

What have success books taught you?

In the USA, we have learned that we may have 5-10 careers in a lifetime. I have learned that you don’t have to be or do just one thing.  Generally, it is always best to focus and become the best at your niche, but you can do more.  Many people have jobs that they like, but want more authentic expression.  To them, I would say to find a hobby, volunteer work,  or other jobs that you love to do on the side if you can.  In my case, I have education standards companies, but I also have been teaching for over 20 years.  I have taught and designed over 300 courses of law and business in the last 20 years and won various teaching awards of which I am very proud of. Very few people have done this amount of teaching in a lifetime. So, in my hobby, I actually have become a pioneer and leader in the areas of e-learning and learning technology.

Where do you think that education and success education is headed?

Well, there will be much more online learning using Apps and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) with companies such as EdX.  People will learn from tablets, phones, desktops and televisions from anywhere in the world.  I have actually taught live or lectured online from Arabia, Asia, EU and Latin America to students around the world.  People still demand onsite VIP training and certification programs, but the colleges are changing quickly.  Many 3rd and 4th tier colleges and law schools will continue to struggle unless they can innovate and offer hybrid online programs and customized masters programs.

Do you think educational curriculums will change?

Business Schools will continue to innovate.  Of course, they will continue to have courses in accounting, economics, management, law, leadership, marketing, and finance.  However, there may continue to be an expanded focus on legal courses and courses on success.  There are methodologies to success in life and business, and the typical curriculums are not covering key ideas of how to start businesses in the USA and abroad, running a business, local or global selling, abiding by regulations, global entrepreneurship, etc.

How can people who can’t afford education proceed?

Many people will begin to use major MOOCs such as FutureLearn, EdX, Coursera, Udemy, and others to complete online courses and diplomas.  Many students will take short courses as a path to achieve certifications, professional designations, and licenses.

What about Traditional Colleges in the next few years?

We may be transitioning to a time where more and more students will use the global degree format where they study and engage experiential work in a few different cities or countries while not being on campus. A student can take credentials such as project management certification or financial planning certification online.  The reality is that a really cool GAP year traveling the world can provide an amazing education and can be much cheaper than one year on a traditional campus.

As an avid tennis fan and player for 40 years,  CEO  and Attorney  George Mentz compares the keys to the major sport of tennis to achievement in life.

“You have got to be in the moment and have that heightened awareness to operate at your full potential,” Commissioner George Mentz  says, referring to the micro-seconds between tennis balls moving across the court at 90-100+  miles per hour. “All sound achievement is built on mastery of: analysis, creativity, purpose,  awareness, planning, skills, imagination, ethics, action and innovating/adapting.”

Overall, Mentz’s life has been a slow and steady path to achievement that led him in 1996 to found one of the most successful educational bodies offering micro-credentials to those who take VIP courses and accredited exams and education from top accredited business schools and law schools.

Counselor Mentz served 20+ years as a professor designing and teaching over 300 courses and programs worldwide using the newest technology and tools.   “Most professors never teach more than 150-200 courses in a lifetime, but technology has changed all of that in the last few years.” Mentz spent over 5 years in several different countries, as a graduate student, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence, an Accredited MBA, and a coveted International Law Certificate while later earning law and investment licenses.  Mentz’s education was completed at top law schools and business schools including William and Mary Law School and Loyola Law School and Loyola MBA programs.

Mentz is a global communicator and has worked and traveled to over 40 nations worldwide.  He first met President Trump in New Orleans in 1988 and has remained a loyal fan ever since.  While Mentz had volunteered for the Bush Family and the Obama administration to assist in helping people with job information and economic trends, Mentz had always wanted to do more and serve more.  In October of 2019, Mentz was honored with an appointment to become a Commissioner for the White House Presidential Scholars Program.  “I am deeply grateful to President Trump and the White House directors who have nominated and  allowed me to serve in this capacity.”

As a private educational executive for a certification body, “We are working toward partnerships and alliances with the largest MOOCs and Educational bodies in the world including  the ACBSP, edX, FutureLearn, Coursera, Udemy, New Oriental Education and several others.  While some small colleges struggle, MOOC companies such as Udemy offer over 100,000 course and attendance certificates.  Coursera and edX have hundreds of  university partners and millions of students offering hundreds of certificates, MicroCredentials,  diplomas,  and degree programs into your state and worldwide.   Mentz says, “We are at a pivotal time in history where e-learning and open learning are expanding so fast that we need to make sure technical students and working students have the opportunity for professional: certifications, designations, charters, and other post-nominal credentials to accommodate the courses and exams taken by students.

The world seems so small Mentz says, “I grew up around the Gov. John Bel Edwards family in Louisiana, and I was a classmate of Steve Scalise at LSU Louisiana State University. “” I respect and support both families.” “As my mother was both German and Sicilian – Hispanic from small town Louisiana, I’d like to think that I bring a special type of diversity and culture to Washington.”

Some of Mentz’s core principles are “teaching, excellence, and giving”, which is something Mentz and the IBS International Board of Standards take very seriously.  Mentz has won several nationally based awards for excellence in teaching along with winning an IBA International Book Award for one of his Success Books called Quantum Bliss. “I firmly believe that if you can teach people the perennial wisdom and principles of success, they can master their destiny and serve humanity at greater levels.” Mentz has authored over 40 books and audio books on success related topics.

Mentz has served on boards and advisory boards in the USA and several nations.  Mentz has served as an advisor to the Global Finance Forum Switzerland, The World E-Commence Forum in the UK, DeVry University, The Institute for Credentialing Excellence and for other charities and non-profits.  Mentz and his family have been active in tree farming for decades and Mentz is the titular Seigneur de Fief Blondel in the Crown Dependency Channel Island of Guernsey.  Mentz serves as the CEO of the IOQM.com International Organization for Quality Management

College Education for Free ? How Innovation and Technology are Changing by George Mentz – Colorado Springs Expert

As a pioneer in e-learning education who has taught over 250 courses online in the last 20 years, I realize the actual costs of education have come down dramatically in the last 30 years.

However, that hasn’t prevented the expansion of student debt to about $1.5 to $2 trillion.

Most politicians these days are saying that free online college education should be available to everyone.

With over 44 million Americans holding student debt, the average working family’s disposable income is now more than ever subject to the whims of the Federal Reserve’s interest rates.

In case the politicians don’t know, free education already exists. You may go to various colleges, online colleges, Coursera, Udemy and other sites such as University of the People and obtain education for free or it is heavily discounted.

Udemy boasts over 100,000 online courses of which many are free. Coursera actually offers top ranked college courses and diplomas online. Many of these educational companies and clearinghouses offer online courses to the masses. They are called MOOCs or Massive Online Open Courses. Some top professors have over 250,000 students in one class.

About 20 years ago, futurists were predicting the collapse of traditional liberal arts colleges because you can go online and enroll in a class, at little cost, that is taught by one of the top ranked professors in the world.

To make a long story short, college tuition and college courses are free right now and most people don’t even know it. Anyone who wants to go to college can use a computer and the internet at home or at the library to take classes.

As for college loans, the typical funds borrowed for education is for tuition and expenses. However, the bulk of the expenses aren’t just tuition.

Here are the top 14 typical costs of education:

  1. Forgoing income by not working
  2. Time or years invested into education
  3. Commuting to school
  4. Books (Digital Books are getting cheaper by day)
  5. Housing
  6. Food
  7. Expenses
  8. Fees
  9. State, City and Federal Taxes on Gas, Internet, Phone etc.
  10. Insurance on cars or other.
  11. Health Care
  12. Parking
  13. Matriculation fees
  14. Costs to take care of children, disabled, or elderly while you are away at a school

In many states, college tuition has been free for decades for those who maintain a solid grade point average in school. Pat Taylor was one of the richest Americans living in Louisiana and developed and promoted the “Taylor Plan,” adopted in Louisiana in 1998, which provides academically qualified students with state-paid tuition for college. In 1997, Republican Governor Murphy J. Foster, Jr. signed Act 1375, a plan which opened the TOPS tuition scholarships to all with a 2.5 grade point average and at least a score of 19 on the ACT.

Family income was removed as a consideration for eligibility. Those with higher grades received $400 to $800 in extra funding to help meet the costs of other college expenses. In Louisiana in 1998, TOPS paid the tuition for over 24,000 students in the amount of $54 million. During the 2014-15 academic year, the program assisted 50,000+ students annually at a cost of about $270 million. LSU Louisiana State University was ranked as a Forbes top 200 university in recent years.

US News has a list of tuition free colleges online. Many of these colleges require some contribution or to have a job on campus or pay exam fees; nevertheless, tuition may be considered free.

Examples of Tuition Free Colleges

  1. Alice Lloyd College
  2. Williamson E. Macaulay Honors College
  3. University of the People
  4. Webb Institute
  5. Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades
  6. Barclay College
  7. College of the Ozarks
  8. University of the People
  9. Haskell Indian Nations University
  10. Berea College (KY)

Overall, the bulk of the costs of college are opportunity costs and costs of living; however, that is minimized if you take courses online and hold a job at the same time.

In the end, nothing of value is free, but a quality college education is priceless especially if you are devoted to learning how to do something of value that can be used in the real world.

Overall, most colleges and universities could probably survive without charging tuition while only billing students for exams, housing, food, services, parking and so forth as that may be enough profit already without even charging tuition.

The dirty secret is that many top-brand colleges are wonderfully overpriced at around $70,000 per year. As a note, the two areas of key inflation over the last 25 years have been health care and education. This is probably because the government subsidizes these industries,

In this political environment, the banks seem to have been demanding a normalization of interest rates and got their request from the Federal Reserve. The banks will now be truly profitable again for the first time in 10 years.

However, now that the student loan system is controlled by the federal government, President Trump may have the power to lower interest rates for the working families who hold this debt that was created over the last 30 years. As rates have gone up 9 times since 2015, student loan delinquency or default rates are now: 11.4% (90+ days delinquent)

We are at a key point in innovation and technology. With e-learning, prices may continue coming down for education, and e-learning continues to roll out new courses, new curriculums, and more skills related programs. However, many traditional colleges are maintaining outdated curriculums as their highest paid professors teach the existing courses and do not have experience nor know how to teach the new courses in areas of finance, marketing, or technology.

Some parents are sending their kids on GAP years to learn tangible skills in experiential areas of life. Some of these GAP programs include a year of travel or a year at sea. In contrast, many parents are still spending close to $300,000 to have their child graduate from a top tier university to prepare for business, medicine, finance, accounting, or law. Sadly, some parents are paying $70,000 a year for their child to complete a degree focused in niche areas of history or politics where these students are literally unprepared for almost any job.

As for sustainability of higher education, some bricks and mortar schools may not be sustainable if they do not remain competitive, well ranked, and convey great value.

Ranking conveys value and one top school actually was sued and lost millions for a ranking scandal.

Only time will tell as the education markets are changing dramatically, but if you are determined to send your kids to great schools for socialization and education, start saving early and contribute to 529 plans, pre-paid plans, or other government recognized plans dedicated to education.

Moreover, gifts direct to universities are still tax free. Also, your children can always apply for aid and subsidized loans. Happy hunting and never forget that there are free programs which are accredited and there are countless free courses online for you to take which can lead to diplomas, degrees and even masters degrees from accredited institutions.

10 Great Success Books That Can Change Your Life

If you’ve ever read a great business or success-related book, there are usually a few priceless nuggets in each manuscript which make it worth your time. Here are 10 of my favorite self-empowerment books, and a key idea from each manuscript  that made it worth reading. Any of these authors and their books can seriously boost your mindset and consciousness of success, power and happiness.

1) Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Define your purpose. While this sounds arbitrary, it has several important meanings such as: What do you want to do and how do you want to be? Moreover, discover who you are and why you want to improve. Hill, N. (1960). Think and Grow Rich. New York: Fawcett Crest.

2) How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

Remembering names and enthusiasm matter. Read this book or take the courses from the Carnegie programs. Either way, you will win. The number one lesson I learned from Carnegie is that other people’s names are music to their ears. Learn names of clients, customers or those in positions of influence. Be enthusiastic with people and miracles will happen. Carnegie, D. (1994). How to Win Friends and Influence People. New York: Pocket Books.

3) The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. Stephen Covey

Sharpen the saw or stay sharp. This advice to me is extremely important because we must all be students of life, be open to learn and continue to grow. Covey, S. R. (1989). The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. London: Simon & Schuster.

4) Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz, MD

Change your beliefs on the inside for greater self confidence. Because he was a plastic surgeon, his thoughts on developing confidence within are much more influential. This is because he helped many people change their looks, yet they still remained dissatisfied until they expanded their world view and developed self regard. Maltz, Maxwell, MD (1960). Psycho-Cybernetics. New York: Pocket Books.

5) The Art of Happiness by The Dalai Lama

Peace and joy can be learned and experienced. His book hits home because this master Buddhist professes that peace and happiness can be cultivated by anyone who wants it. His Holiness the Dalai Lama & Howard C. Cutler (1999). The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living. London: Hodder & Stroughton.

6) The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra, MD

Follow your natural expression. The magic of Dr. Chopra is that he is a master of helping people improve their lives and thinking. Dr. Chopra helps us move toward our purpose, right livelihood and authentic selves. Chopra, D. (1996). The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. London: Bantam Press.

7) The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy

Optimize your thinking for success. This is a classic work because Dr. Murphy is a professional at showing people that they can alter their consciousness and beliefs toward a greater good and prosperity. He is a connoisseur of the use of affirmations as a path to mental transformation for greater relationships, success and career improvement. Murphy, J. (1963). The Power of Your Subconscious Mind. New Jersey: Prentice Hall.

8) Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracy

Specify goals and know what you want. Buy any book you can find by Mr. Tracy. He is a consummate professional and a world class writer on the issues of entrepreneurship and management consulting. He famously states that less than 3 percent of people set goals. Tracy, B. (1993). Maximum Achievement: Strategies and Skills That Will Unlock Your Hidden Powers to Succeed. New York: Fireside.

9) The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles

Gratitude is the key to abundance. If you have not read this 100-year-old book, do it. It is quite an amazing piece of prosperity writing from the turn of the century, and it is concise. Wattles’ opus is still a bestseller as he is the genius who has distilled the ideas of success and excellence into a short revolutionary treatise. Wattles, W.D. (1976). Financial Success Through the Power of Thought [The Science of Getting Rich]. Rochester, Vermont: Destiny Books. (Written originally around 1910). Or How to Promote Yourself by Wattles. Lulu Press, ISBN-10: 0615223494.

10) As You Think by Mark Allen

Your experience is shaped according to the totality of your thought. Mr. Allen has a couple of super books, a world recognized publishing house and some of the biggest selling clients. Buy any of Mr. Allen’s books to discover timeless secrets of success. Allen, J. (1998). As You Think. Ed. with introduction by M. Allen. Novato, CA: New World Library.

Sometimes it takes a book or seminar like the ones listed above to jolt our consciousness to make your next move in life. Sometimes economies are bad and other times they seem great. Refuse to participate in doom and gloom, and follow your dreams to the best of your ability. Be your best, find your purpose and show the world your excellence and passion.

10 Trends to Watch in 2015

Here are 10 trends to watch out for in 2015:

1. Technology has made finding oil and gas much more accurate and cost-effective everywhere. Large or luxury auto sales will continue regardless of MPG ratings. Energy independence is a real option in the US and the Americas.

2. People are tired of commuting and will work from home given the option. Thus, less oil and gas is needed due to telecommuting. Lifestyle is becoming more important to working families. Being able to work from home and raise a family could become a civil rights issue.

3. Citizens will take necessary steps to avoid modernized taxes or inner-city taxation. People will buy and build right outside of states such as: New York, California, or outside of cities such as Chicago, Boston, LA or San Fran. States like Texas, Tennessee, Florida and other Federal tax free jurisdiction will gain momentum while acquiring the bulk of the baby boomer retirees who want to stretch their incomes.

4. People will live where there are high quality schools or parents may: a) home school their kids, b) send their children to private schools, c) use tutors, or d) use online study.

5. Cheaper oil may reduce the GDP of countries and super-states such as Nigeria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and other active regions such as Texas and Alaska. Cheap gas has spurred some consumer spending, but cheaper gas may reduce tax revenue for governments, states and cities.

6. The demographics of fast growing regions such as India, China and Indonesia/Malaysia should continue to drive up energy and commodity costs for the next 40 years. More college grads in the US may leave and work offshore than ever before.

7. Colleges and Universities may crumble in size or fail unless value is provided. There is an ever expanding number of free options: college courses, MOOCS (Massive Courses), open courses, free online diplomas, free or almost free degree options and more. 2015 may be the easiest year in 40 years to get into a graduate school for law or business.

8. The dollar and stock market are temporarily strong and more people will travel internationally as a result of this. Low interest rates and cheap energy are contributing to short-term economic power, building, buying and hiring.

9. Conventional security and conventional policing is changing toward technology quickly. Look for more cameras, more drones, more robots, more tracking, more surveillance, and more uses of stun or paralyzing technology.

10. Branchless Banking may shift to Cyber Cashless Exchanges that are linked, such as: Amazon (a- coin), Alibaba (b-coin) Ebay (e-coin), Google (g-coin) and PayPal (p-coin), and other related companies. It’s also possible big players like Visa, Amex, Discover, and Schwab will do deals with companies like Amazon and Apple to provide branchless banking worldwide.
