College Education in the 21st Century – The Future and Technology

SUCCESS AND EDUCATION OF OUR YOUTH

George Mentz is now a Commissioner for the US Presidential Scholars Program. He is also a prolific educator, futurist and historian on education, human performance and business success strategy.

Success scholar George Mentz’s has authored over 40 books and audiobooks including, The Wealth Management Handbook &  “The Secret Laws of Money,” discusses innovative ways to practically apply:  wealth management, financial planning, project management,  and prosperity strategies in daily life. Inspired by Ben Franklin, Sun Tzu, and Marcus Aurelius among others, Mentz says that, “Achievement can be greatly enhanced with just a 1-3% increase in daily performance.” “Fundamentally, education, skills and credentials are keys to success.”

George Mentz is also an award winning author, scholar of success books and law professor. Mentz says that the research of proven success strategies has paid off for countless people.  One of his mottos is “The wings of achievement are based on proven successful models”.

Mentz says, a desire for success, unifies the major business and human performance traditions. People take for granted the principles of success.  Success books are something original to America as the USA was one of the first nations to allow a free press where individuals could write and speak about individualism, entrepreneurship, seeking careers, and creating prosperity.  If you look at the writings of Benjamin Franklin or Emerson, you can see the basic principles of individual success. It was a relatively new idea in early America that you could be, do and have what you legally wanted if you were willing to work for it.

What inspired your research and books?

I was initially intrigued by the idea that if you can model yourself after the mindset of great people, you can achieve success.  Later I found that even the most successful people usually were inspired by a book or a person.  Finding out what smart or happy people do and think to achieve results began to be one of my lifetime goals. It became a study of the consciousness of success.

In reading self help books, what do you seek to learn?

You can read a whole book on success and maybe get just one or two key nuggets of success from the book.  However, that one little nugget can be a life saver or the real secret to achieving success in a particular area such as: Sports, Business, Survival, Health, Relationships,  Investing or even Taxation.

What have success books taught you?

In the USA, we have learned that we may have 5-10 careers in a lifetime. I have learned that you don’t have to be or do just one thing.  Generally, it is always best to focus and become the best at your niche, but you can do more.  Many people have jobs that they like, but want more authentic expression.  To them, I would say to find a hobby, volunteer work,  or other jobs that you love to do on the side if you can.  In my case, I have education standards companies, but I also have been teaching for over 20 years.  I have taught and designed over 300 courses of law and business in the last 20 years and won various teaching awards of which I am very proud of. Very few people have done this amount of teaching in a lifetime. So, in my hobby, I actually have become a pioneer and leader in the areas of e-learning and learning technology.

Where do you think that education and success education is headed?

Well, there will be much more online learning using Apps and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) with companies such as EdX.  People will learn from tablets, phones, desktops and televisions from anywhere in the world.  I have actually taught live or lectured online from Arabia, Asia, EU and Latin America to students around the world.  People still demand onsite VIP training and certification programs, but the colleges are changing quickly.  Many 3rd and 4th tier colleges and law schools will continue to struggle unless they can innovate and offer hybrid online programs and customized masters programs.

Do you think educational curriculums will change?

Business Schools will continue to innovate.  Of course, they will continue to have courses in accounting, economics, management, law, leadership, marketing, and finance.  However, there may continue to be an expanded focus on legal courses and courses on success.  There are methodologies to success in life and business, and the typical curriculums are not covering key ideas of how to start businesses in the USA and abroad, running a business, local or global selling, abiding by regulations, global entrepreneurship, etc.

How can people who can’t afford education proceed?

Many people will begin to use major MOOCs such as FutureLearn, EdX, Coursera, Udemy, and others to complete online courses and diplomas.  Many students will take short courses as a path to achieve certifications, professional designations, and licenses.

What about Traditional Colleges in the next few years?

We may be transitioning to a time where more and more students will use the global degree format where they study and engage experiential work in a few different cities or countries while not being on campus. A student can take credentials such as project management certification or financial planning certification online.  The reality is that a really cool GAP year traveling the world can provide an amazing education and can be much cheaper than one year on a traditional campus.

Helping  increase certification programs and scholarships for those in need in over 40 countries.

U.S. Law School graduate who engaged research and education in USA, EU Europe,&  Latin America achieving a Doctor of Jurisprudence in Civil Law, and MBA and International Law Credentials.

As an avid tennis fan and player for 40 years,  CEO  and Attorney  George Mentz compares the keys to the major sport of tennis to achievement in life.

“You have got to be in the moment and have that heightened awareness to operate at your full potential,” Commissioner George Mentz  says, referring to the micro-seconds between tennis balls moving across the court at 90-100+  miles per hour. “All sound achievement is built on mastery of: analysis, creativity, purpose,  awareness, planning, skills, imagination, ethics, action and innovating/adapting.”

Overall, Mentz’s life has been a slow and steady path to achievement that led him in 1996 to found one of the most successful educational bodies offering micro-credentials to those who take VIP courses and accredited exams and education from top accredited business schools and law schools.

Counselor Mentz served 20+ years as a professor designing and teaching over 300 courses and programs worldwide using the newest technology and tools.   “Most professors never teach more than 150-200 courses in a lifetime, but technology has changed all of that in the last few years.” Mentz spent over 5 years in several different countries, as a graduate student, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence, an Accredited MBA, and a coveted International Law Certificate while later earning law and investment licenses.  Mentz’s education was completed at top law schools and business schools including William and Mary Law School and Loyola Law School and Loyola MBA programs.

Mentz is a global communicator and has worked and traveled to over 40 nations worldwide.  He first met President Trump in New Orleans in 1988 and has remained a loyal fan ever since.  While Mentz had volunteered for the Bush Family and the Obama administration to assist in helping people with job information and economic trends, Mentz had always wanted to do more and serve more.  In October of 2019, Mentz was honored with an appointment to become a Commissioner for the White House Presidential Scholars Program.  “I am deeply grateful to President Trump and the White House directors who have nominated and  allowed me to serve in this capacity.”

As a private educational executive for a certification body, “We are working toward partnerships and alliances with the largest MOOCs and Educational bodies in the world including  the ACBSP, edX, FutureLearn, Coursera, Udemy, New Oriental Education and several others.  While some small colleges struggle, MOOC companies such as Udemy offer over 100,000 course and attendance certificates.  Coursera and edX have hundreds of  university partners and millions of students offering hundreds of certificates, MicroCredentials,  diplomas,  and degree programs into your state and worldwide.   Mentz says, “We are at a pivotal time in history where e-learning and open learning are expanding so fast that we need to make sure technical students and working students have the opportunity for professional: certifications, designations, charters, and other post-nominal credentials to accommodate the courses and exams taken by students.

The world seems so small Mentz says, “I grew up around the Gov. John Bel Edwards family in Louisiana, and I was a classmate of Steve Scalise at LSU Louisiana State University. “” I respect and support both families.” “As my mother was both German and Sicilian – Hispanic from small town Louisiana, I’d like to think that I bring a special type of diversity and culture to Washington.”

Some of Mentz’s core principles are “teaching, excellence, and giving”, which is something Mentz and the IBS International Board of Standards take very seriously.  Mentz has won several nationally based awards for excellence in teaching along with winning an IBA International Book Award for one of his Success Books called Quantum Bliss. “I firmly believe that if you can teach people the perennial wisdom and principles of success, they can master their destiny and serve humanity at greater levels.” Mentz has authored over 40 books and audio books on success related topics.

Mentz has served on boards and advisory boards in the USA and several nations.  Mentz has served as an advisor to the Global Finance Forum Switzerland, The World E-Commence Forum in the UK, DeVry University, The Institute for Credentialing Excellence and for other charities and non-profits.  Mentz and his family have been active in tree farming for decades and Mentz is the titular Seigneur de Fief Blondel in the Crown Dependency Channel Island of Guernsey.  Mentz serves as the CEO of the IOQM.com International Organization for Quality Management

Certification Quality Standards – The Highest Standards include Exams and Courses from Top Business Schools and Law Schools for Higher Standards in Professional Designations.

Certification Quality Standards – The Highest Standards include Exams and Courses from Top Business Schools and Law Schools for Higher Standards in Professional Designations.

Professional Designations in the United States and internationally have a long history. Legal cases such as the IBANEZ decision of the Supreme Court dictate that bone fide “board certifications” or “professional designations” have special criteria which includes:

1)     Accredited Education, 2) Assessment, 3) Degree 4) Continuing Education and 5) Ethics/Professionalism 6) Experience.

2)     The Peel and Ibanez US Supreme Court Decision spell out the rules for proper use of certifications, designations, and qualifications for lawyers and professionals.

3)     Professional designations are not regulated like certificates and degrees because they are not offering post secondary education and fit into the category of “Professional Development”

According to George Mentz, Esq, in the last 50 years, many top certifying bodies have NOT required an accredited degree or diploma to become a member. Many of the top certifying bodies merely require experience and to take a test or quiz at a testing shop at a mall or street location. However, the expansion of business schools, eLearning, and MOOCs Massive Online/Open Courses have changed assessment, exams and course delivery. “As a policy, we have always required an accredited diploma.” Says Counselor Mentz.

The GAFM Global Academy of Finance and Management has been offering professional designations to those who complete Level II “Double Accredited” business schools since 2003. By legal agreements direct with CHEA recognized Accreditation agencies, the GAFM was the first to directly accept and approve top business school exams, courses and degrees for credit toward meeting the educational component for Certification under the Ibanez Supreme court dictates.

Types of Certifications and Accreditation Standards – Level II is the Highest

Certification requiring Level 2 Accredited education and exams. This is the highest form of educational requirements. This education is generally preferred for state licensure and for certifications from organizations such as the Global Academy of Finance and Management since 2003-4. Level 2 means that both the college or university are accredited AND the business school is also separately nationally-accredited by a government recognized body. The ACBSP Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, AACSB and ABA are examples of level 2 accreditation while education from an ABA American Bar Association education would also be level 2. SEE: ACBSP AACSB EQUIS and ABA or graduate law school. The Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognizes these accreditation agencies.

In this new paradigm of e-Learning, MOOCs, and other non traditional education, we are now demanding higher standards. To earn a certification through Level II education, you must:

1.     Apply and become accepted into a Level II business school.

2.     Take the required courses and exams to achieve certification eligibility.

3.     Successfully complete approved and accepted exams and courses at a Level II business school and institution such as: Yale, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, UVA, LSU, University of California, University of Colorado, Louisiana State University etc.

To learn more, read the ACBSP or CHEA agreement. Go to http://www.gafm.com

The GAFM Global Academy of Finance and Management is a charter signatory of the CHEA Quality Standards USA and is TUV Accredited and ISO 29990 Certified for Certification Assessment/Training.

The GAFMs and the IOQM International Organization for Quality Management are part of the International Board of Standards which is a Charter Signatory of the CHEA quality standards Memo. The GAFM and IOQM are recognized by the ACBSP Accreditation Council for Business Schools and programs and directly accepts AACSB education.

*Most State and Sovereign Governments worldwide prefer Level II Accreditation for the purposes of business school standards, top MBA programs, or becoming a CPA or Chartered Accountant. Further, Government recognized Bar Accredited Education is required for a legal education and licenses. In a Level 2 accreditation, the college or university and the business school are separately accredited, but the accounting program may not be separately accredited. This level applies to a business school that is accredited by an organization recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as a specialized or professional accrediting organization, such as the AACSB or the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Level II: Accreditation is associated with a business school or college or business; the institution must be accredited by a national accreditation agency recognized by the board

• Note: A degree, MBA, MSc, or credential based on a Level 2 education is more widely accepted globally than qualifications or degrees that do not maintain “Level 2” Status. Further, course credits are more easily transferable with reciprocity from Level 2 business schools and institutions that are double accredited. * A key legal note is that a certification/designation is not a “certificate, diploma or academic qualification”.

Mentz is one of the first in the USA to ever earn a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD), an AACSB Accredited MBA, and an international law graduate certificate with various licenses in law and finance from FINRA/NASD. Mentz studied and engaged research in the USA, Latin America and Europe and Mentz has visited and worked in over 40 countries worldwide.

Mentz is the author of over 50 success related books and audiobooks and is the winner of an IBA Book award for Self Help. Mentz is a historian of human performance, success literature and metaphysics.

George Mentz was a pioneer in credentialing standards as the first education lawyer to negotiate legal deals directly with accreditation agencies and integrate and accept accredited business school exams and courses as a path to board certification and professional designations.

George Mentz JD MBA CILS is an economics expert, journalist and analyst at Newsmax and has been a brain trust member and dream team member of various media expert teams including with the famous National Underwriter group on tax and wealth management issues. Mentz has been a faculty member for some top colleges and law schools including Loyola Business School and the Graduate programs at Texas A&M Law School.

Counselor Mentz is the son of the late Judge Henry Mentz of the US Federal Courts in New Orleans and the late Ann Lamantia Mentz. Mentz has won several awards for teaching and charitable service, and is a proud Sicilian Hispanic with a European background and member of various ethnic & cultural societies.

Prof. Mentz is originally from Louisiana and an LSU classmate of Steve Scalise. Mentz has been a Colorado resident for over a decade. Further, Mentz had met Donald Trump when he was in New Orleans in 1988 at the Bush Convention, and Mentz has been a fan of Mr. Trump ever since. Counselor Mentz graduated from law school after attending Loyola Law School in New Orleans and William & Mary Law School international law programs, and Mentz also holds an MBA from Loyola Business School along with a CILS Graduate Certificate in International Law. Mentz was chairman of the Tax & Estate Planning Law Review while in graduate school.

After volunteering for various administrations without recognition, Mentz earned this present appointment from President Trump. Mentz had offered free advisory services as a lawyer and economist writing for the Department of Labor during the Bush and Obama years helping the most vulnerable in the USA find quality job information.

Mentz is the General Counsel of the Academy’s Board of Standards which is America’s first TUV accredited and ISO 29990 certified educational company. Mentz is an an education executive and e-learning pioneer who has been integrating the highest certification standards from: business schools, online learning, and VIP Training programs for over 15 years.  Mentz’s accredited educational body recognizes  quality educational programs, training, and online programs to offer their proprietary “vendor neutral”  professional certifications.  Mentz’s organizations now also accredit top online course programs and MOOCs “Massive Open Online Courses”  as a certification path including great companies such as EdX.org courses.  Mentz has  worked in  and visited over 40 countries working with top universities and great global companies such as INFORMA and Thomson Reuters training and events to bring the best education and certification standards worldwide, and his companies are the first in the world to accept education and exams from ACBSP and AACSB business schools which are the greatest accreditation agencies in the world including over one thousand business schools worldwide. Further, these same accreditation standard principles can also be applied also for technical certification programs.”

‘I am blessed and honored to be able to provide this public service, especially because of the role that a Presidential Commissioner plays in the development of future leaders, which is the golden key to our nation’s innovation and competitiveness,’ Mentz said. ‘The Wall Street Journal wrote about my efforts to raise standards by integrating and accepting accredited business school programs several times, and we are extremely happy to be able to serve this nation by honoring our most promising scholars.’ George Mentz, Counselor of Law – LA USA

As Robert Frank wrote about Mentz in the Wall Street Journal, all of the certifications require courses, education or licensing that already includes coursework and assessment,  to earn a certification or designation. Author Jason Zweig and the Wall Street Journal emphasized George Mentz’s double accreditation standards where courses are required in 2010 referring to the AACSB and ACBSP accreditation which accredits top business schools in the USA and abroad. The Wall Street Journal simultaneously noted the Academy’s education standards in the WSJ designation guide in 2010 and also referenced the FINRA monitoring. Even today, to be certified, if you already have a qualifying accredited courses and degree, you will not need to take further exams if you have already taken 20-30 exams in an accredited business school program. People who have enrolled for several years and earned a degree after completing various courses & exams at an accredited university or business school may apply directly for Certification.

Attorney Mentz has stressed the importance of accredited business education and exams for over 15 years to achieve graduate certification from the GAFM Global Academy of Finance and Management® International Board of Standards, LLC.  While many organizations allowed applicants in the USA who do not have a college education to be licensed or certified, all of our USA credential applicants must have an accredited diploma education, related government training, assessment, & education. Mentz is the founder of Mentz Law Firm and ClassActionLawsuit.org which fights for consumer protection and against fraud. Mentz is also owner of several newspapers including the Colorado Mountaineer Est. 1875, owner of the oldest New York Newspaper which is the New York Gazette ®  and the Magazine of Wall Street.    Mentz and his educational efforts have been seen in television, radio, press, podcasts and more in places like India, China, Europe, Latin America, South Asia, and more.

Mentz says, “Anyone can go online and find that our educational efforts are  TUV-accredited, ISO 29990 certified for training, and we were the first to have a direct legal agreement in 2004 with the ACBSP for certification standards, and we even had mutual public recognition with the AACSB Accreditation Agency since 2003.” Some people are negligent in not understanding these fundamental historical facts. Thus, Mentz said, “Everyone, as per our public credentialing requirements must take accredited program courses and assessment to be certified, along with having the experience, and agree to the ethics and continuing education guidelines.” For example, if anyone enrolls in business schools at Yale, Harvard, LSU, CU or CSU, they can take the exams, business courses and specializations to become “educationally qualified” and ‘assessment qualified’ for certification. Mentz even has negotiated legal trademark agreements with the CFP and CFA organizations and has the original signed contracts for anyone to see. Mentz says that his organizations require express consent for anyone to become an advisor. To become an honorary advisory member of our Global Academy of Finance and Management, everyone submits written consent including Dr. Harvey and Mr. Gold and we have had both Harvey and Gold’s consent letters published in public for several years.

Mentz has said, “Most reporters and educators are confused about the use of accredited institutional courses, exams and degrees as a path to credentialing. Some unwittingly disparage their very own universities by not understanding ACBSP and AACSB policies. While the certification body offers no post-secondary diploma or certificate, it does offer professional development, designations and certifications under various Supreme Court decisions and U.S. ‘professional development rules.’”

George Mentz plans on working further with e-Learning and MOOC leaders such as ACBSP Schools, AACSB Schools, ABA Accredited Law Schools, EdX, Coursera, FutureLearn, Udemy and Google Education to promote accredited courses & diploma programs as a direct path to certification. Mentz plans to help students globally achieve meaningful skills and education.

Mentz was recently member of the month for Phi Delta Phi international legal fraternity in the Barristers Brief where he discussed his accidental acquisition of the seignory of an ancient fief at auction. Counselor Mentz, using his civil law and international legal education, registered the 500+-year-old Fief in Guernsey where aspects of feudal law still exist. This fief was registered in the royal courts of Guernsey directly with the crown and enables the owner to be a titular Seigneur and also enables ownership of the foreshore and beaches and other rights. There are only a few legally recognizable fiefs remaining in the world.

College Education for Free ? How Innovation and Technology are Changing by George Mentz – Colorado Springs Expert

As a pioneer in e-learning education who has taught over 250 courses online in the last 20 years, I realize the actual costs of education have come down dramatically in the last 30 years.

However, that hasn’t prevented the expansion of student debt to about $1.5 to $2 trillion.

Most politicians these days are saying that free online college education should be available to everyone.

With over 44 million Americans holding student debt, the average working family’s disposable income is now more than ever subject to the whims of the Federal Reserve’s interest rates.

In case the politicians don’t know, free education already exists. You may go to various colleges, online colleges, Coursera, Udemy and other sites such as University of the People and obtain education for free or it is heavily discounted.

Udemy boasts over 100,000 online courses of which many are free. Coursera actually offers top ranked college courses and diplomas online. Many of these educational companies and clearinghouses offer online courses to the masses. They are called MOOCs or Massive Online Open Courses. Some top professors have over 250,000 students in one class.

About 20 years ago, futurists were predicting the collapse of traditional liberal arts colleges because you can go online and enroll in a class, at little cost, that is taught by one of the top ranked professors in the world.

To make a long story short, college tuition and college courses are free right now and most people don’t even know it. Anyone who wants to go to college can use a computer and the internet at home or at the library to take classes.

As for college loans, the typical funds borrowed for education is for tuition and expenses. However, the bulk of the expenses aren’t just tuition.

Here are the top 14 typical costs of education:

  1. Forgoing income by not working
  2. Time or years invested into education
  3. Commuting to school
  4. Books (Digital Books are getting cheaper by day)
  5. Housing
  6. Food
  7. Expenses
  8. Fees
  9. State, City and Federal Taxes on Gas, Internet, Phone etc.
  10. Insurance on cars or other.
  11. Health Care
  12. Parking
  13. Matriculation fees
  14. Costs to take care of children, disabled, or elderly while you are away at a school

In many states, college tuition has been free for decades for those who maintain a solid grade point average in school. Pat Taylor was one of the richest Americans living in Louisiana and developed and promoted the “Taylor Plan,” adopted in Louisiana in 1998, which provides academically qualified students with state-paid tuition for college. In 1997, Republican Governor Murphy J. Foster, Jr. signed Act 1375, a plan which opened the TOPS tuition scholarships to all with a 2.5 grade point average and at least a score of 19 on the ACT.

Family income was removed as a consideration for eligibility. Those with higher grades received $400 to $800 in extra funding to help meet the costs of other college expenses. In Louisiana in 1998, TOPS paid the tuition for over 24,000 students in the amount of $54 million. During the 2014-15 academic year, the program assisted 50,000+ students annually at a cost of about $270 million. LSU Louisiana State University was ranked as a Forbes top 200 university in recent years.

US News has a list of tuition free colleges online. Many of these colleges require some contribution or to have a job on campus or pay exam fees; nevertheless, tuition may be considered free.

Examples of Tuition Free Colleges

  1. Alice Lloyd College
  2. Williamson E. Macaulay Honors College
  3. University of the People
  4. Webb Institute
  5. Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades
  6. Barclay College
  7. College of the Ozarks
  8. University of the People
  9. Haskell Indian Nations University
  10. Berea College (KY)

Overall, the bulk of the costs of college are opportunity costs and costs of living; however, that is minimized if you take courses online and hold a job at the same time.

In the end, nothing of value is free, but a quality college education is priceless especially if you are devoted to learning how to do something of value that can be used in the real world.

Overall, most colleges and universities could probably survive without charging tuition while only billing students for exams, housing, food, services, parking and so forth as that may be enough profit already without even charging tuition.

The dirty secret is that many top-brand colleges are wonderfully overpriced at around $70,000 per year. As a note, the two areas of key inflation over the last 25 years have been health care and education. This is probably because the government subsidizes these industries,

In this political environment, the banks seem to have been demanding a normalization of interest rates and got their request from the Federal Reserve. The banks will now be truly profitable again for the first time in 10 years.

However, now that the student loan system is controlled by the federal government, President Trump may have the power to lower interest rates for the working families who hold this debt that was created over the last 30 years. As rates have gone up 9 times since 2015, student loan delinquency or default rates are now: 11.4% (90+ days delinquent)

We are at a key point in innovation and technology. With e-learning, prices may continue coming down for education, and e-learning continues to roll out new courses, new curriculums, and more skills related programs. However, many traditional colleges are maintaining outdated curriculums as their highest paid professors teach the existing courses and do not have experience nor know how to teach the new courses in areas of finance, marketing, or technology.

Some parents are sending their kids on GAP years to learn tangible skills in experiential areas of life. Some of these GAP programs include a year of travel or a year at sea. In contrast, many parents are still spending close to $300,000 to have their child graduate from a top tier university to prepare for business, medicine, finance, accounting, or law. Sadly, some parents are paying $70,000 a year for their child to complete a degree focused in niche areas of history or politics where these students are literally unprepared for almost any job.

As for sustainability of higher education, some bricks and mortar schools may not be sustainable if they do not remain competitive, well ranked, and convey great value.

Ranking conveys value and one top school actually was sued and lost millions for a ranking scandal.

Only time will tell as the education markets are changing dramatically, but if you are determined to send your kids to great schools for socialization and education, start saving early and contribute to 529 plans, pre-paid plans, or other government recognized plans dedicated to education.

Moreover, gifts direct to universities are still tax free. Also, your children can always apply for aid and subsidized loans. Happy hunting and never forget that there are free programs which are accredited and there are countless free courses online for you to take which can lead to diplomas, degrees and even masters degrees from accredited institutions.
